Student unions::
Educationists and political leaders have rightly said that political parties should cut off ties with student bodies to restore student politics to its past glory. According to a news item, they also underlined the need for regular elections to the student unions at public universities and colleges and councils of student organizations and their units. They were speaking at a roundtable discussion organized by a newspaper in the city on Friday. We support the opinions.

There was no alternative to student unions to create efficient leadership at the national level. Most of our national leaders including the Father of the Nation, Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, emerged from student unions. Unions give its leaders the A to Z knowledge of the national politics and what action they should take for a prosperous future. Thus they gain efficiency in leading the country in the right way.
But the sad part of the story is that most of our student unions acts as student wing of political parties. Then the elections of these unions are not held regularly. Some so-called students take this opportunity to continue their leaderships for years. Take Dhaka University Student Union. No election of the organization has been held in more than two decades. This is not a healthy practice. Elections of these unions should be held regularly in time. This practice is necessary for creating new leadership and improving their efficiency.
We agree with the panelists that student unions can create efficient national leaders. But for that regular election of unions is a must. We hope the adminitration will take necessary steps for the immediate free and fair election of the Dhaka University Student Union. The students of the university will elect young, patriotic, and intelligent students as their leaders. This will surely restore the brilliant organization in its glorious image. We, like the whole nation, are waiting eagerly to see that happen.
